Seaborne Airlines Faces Potential Sale to Nella Airlines Affiliate
Seaborne Virgin Islands, a critical carrier for inter-island travel in the territory, is nearing a potential sale after enduring financial challenges. The prospective buyer, STK I US LLC, is linked to Nella Airlines, a U.S.-based aviation group led by Brazilian entrepreneur Mauricio Souza. Nella Airlines has previously sought to acquire struggling airlines in Latin America, including operations in Bolivia and Venezuela.
The Government of the Virgin Islands (GVI) has acknowledged Seaborne’s importance as a vital link between islands. The proposed sale has sparked discussions about whether new ownership could stabilize the airline or if challenges will persist regardless of the transition.
According to court documents, the offer from STK I US LLC includes $200,000 in cash and the assumption of approximately $625,000 in Seaborne’s liabilities. The proposal outlines commitments to maintain Seaborne’s services, preserve jobs, and sustain regional air connectivity. A federal court hearing is scheduled for July 1st to review and potentially approve the deal.
Seaborne Airlines plays a significant role in the Virgin Islands’ economy, supporting tourism, business, and disaster response efforts. The Public Services Commission and several lawmakers have emphasized the airline’s critical function and called for transparency throughout the transition process.
The bankruptcy proceedings remain open to other bidders, but any competing offers must exceed STK’s terms by at least $100,000 and include a break-up fee. The outcome of the July 1st hearing could determine the future of regional air service in the Virgin Islands.
