St. Croix Residents Warned of Rising Burglary Incidents
These incidents are occurring island-wide, from Frederiksted to Christiansted, with some neighborhoods experiencing slightly elevated activity. According to VIPD, most cases fall under “burglary third,” where homes are broken into while residents are away at work, running errands, or traveling. Burglars are reportedly patient, observing homes for signs of absence before striking.
Other cases involve “burglary second,” where thieves enter homes while residents are asleep or unaware. Fortunately, “burglary first,” where criminals confront residents directly during a robbery, remains limited for now.
VIPD has issued the following advice to residents to help protect their homes and belongings:
- Lock up: Secure doors, windows, and gates at all times, day and night.
- Use security systems: Install cameras or alarms, even basic systems that can alert you via your phone.
- Secure valuables: Store high-value items like jewelry or cash in safes or safety deposit boxes.
- Be vigilant: Watch for unusual parked cars or strangers in residential areas and look out for your neighbors.
Deputy Chief Joseph emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “It’s not just homes. Businesses and restaurants are targets too. Everyone’s at risk. We need your help.”
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity or provide information about stolen property or suspects by contacting Crime Stoppers.
As the community faces this challenge, neighbors are urged to come together, share ideas, and create plans to enhance safety and security in their areas.
