Operation Dry Water: Increased Patrols for Boating Safety in the USVI
As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are ramping up patrols as part of Operation Dry Water. This national campaign focuses on preventing boating under the influence (BUI) to ensure safety on the water.
Throughout the weekend, patrols will conduct dockside safety inspections and boating safety boardings across the region. Officers will be on the lookout for impaired operators, missing safety equipment, and other potential hazards. The effort involves federal officers, local law enforcement, and volunteers working together at marinas and public access points.
Last year, Operation Dry Water led to the removal of 584 impaired boaters nationwide. Alcohol remains a significant factor in boating fatalities, contributing to 20% of fatal boating accidents, with 92 deaths reported in 2024. Officials hope that this year’s increased patrols will help prevent further tragedies.
Boaters are urged to prepare for inspections and ensure compliance with safety laws. The Coast Guard advises all boaters to:
- Wear a life jacket
- Avoid drinking while boating
- File a float plan
- Inspect their vessel and navigation equipment
- Carry a marine band radio and EPIRB
- Take a boating safety course
- Check the weather before launching
Operation Dry Water will continue through the weekend, aiming to promote safe and responsible boating practices. Stay informed and stay safe.
